Mud hole tested. Son approved. I keep a few of these in the trunk of my car in case we ever get into an emergency and need clean drinking water
I would recommend the LifeStraw for any backpacker. Even a day hiker. This lightweight tool can help reduce your pack weight significantly if you know there will be a decent source of water nearby. Drinking water from a cool stream tastes so much better than iodine treated water. I've used the same LifeStraw five or six times now and have had no health issues at all.
I purchased this to take on all of my camping trips. I am often out for days at a time hiking through the mountains and I've used this a number of times now in various streams or collected rain water. It filters great, the water has always tasted fine and I've never gotten sick!
Bought a LifeStraw about a year ago and brought it, still wrapped, on dozens of hikes and excursions without ever needing to use it. Was starting to feel like an unnecessary purchase ... until it was absolutely necessary! Hiking the rim-to-rim Grand Canyon trails in 100-degree heat I was left with very limited supply of water with several miles of climbing to go before a clean water stop. When a creek appeared, I whipped out the lifestraw and drank to my throat's content. This was flowing water and while not brown, it was clearly not potable. Drinking from the LifeStraw was pleasant (aside from needing to get down on all fours to reach the water level) and tasted as good (if not better) than the clean water at the rest stations. This is a MUST have for any serious adventurer - it's so small and compact it easily fits in any pack and quite simply, you never know when you'll need it, and when you need it, you don't want to be without it.
